Diet : limit sodium, potassium and phosphate; protein as prescribed. Avoid salt substitutes, which are potassium chloride.. Fluids : as prescribed, often restricted; measure everything including ice, soup and medication diluents.. Medication : avoid NSAIDs entirely, adjust doses for renal function, take phosphate binders with meals not between them.. Monitor : daily weight, blood pressure, edema, signs of hyperkalemia.. Protect the fistula arm : no blood pressure, no venipuncture, no intravenous, no tight clothing or watch. Check thrill and bruit each shift.
