Chronic kidney disease — teaching

Diet: limit sodium, potassium and phosphate; protein as prescribed. Avoid salt substitutes, which are potassium chloride. Fluids: as prescribed, often restricted; measure everything including ice, soup and medication diluents. Medication: avoid NSAIDs entirely, adjust doses for renal function, take phosphate binders with meals not between them. Monitor: daily weight, blood pressure, edema, signs of hyperkalemia. Protect the fistula arm: no blood pressure, no venipuncture, no intravenous, no tight clothing or watch. Check thrill and bruit each shift.
