Teaching and health literacy
Assume nothing about reading ability. Many people hide difficulty reading, and handing over a pamphlet is not teaching. Plain language, short sentences, one idea at a time, no more than three key messages per session. Show, then have the person do it. A demonstration returned is worth more than any explanation. Verify with teach-back: "so I am sure I explained it well, tell me in your own words what you will do at home." Never ask only whether they understood. Involve the person who will actually do the task at home, and choose a moment when they are not in pain or exhausted.
