Caregiver strain

Signs: exhaustion, sleeping poorly, having given up all personal activities, irritability toward the person cared for, weight change, minimizing their own health problems, saying they are managing while describing an impossible schedule. Caregiver strain is a risk factor for mistreatment and for the person's institutionalization, and it is a legitimate nursing target in its own right. Ask directly: how are you sleeping, when did you last go out, who relieves you. Offer respite services, day centres, home support, and a caregiver support association.
